Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
What is Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?
Robotic Radical Prostatectomy is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which the entire prostate gland is removed with the help of surgical robotic equipment.
The surgeon can operate via small incisions, fewer post-operative complications, faster recovery and reduced duration of stay in hospital. If nerve sparing surgery is planned, robotic-assistance can help by enhancing precision with 3 dimension visualization and magnification. If wide excision if planned along with nerve, nerve grafting ( sural nerve) can be an option as per the advice of the surgeon.
Why would someone need a Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?
Majority of people with prostate cancer are candidates for Robotic Surgery, however your surgeon will be best suited to determine what course of prostate treatment is appropriate for you.
Though best results have been obtained with Robotic Surgery in early stage cancers, late stages can be operated with Robotic-Assistance at the discretion of the surgeon.
Frequently asked questions after Robotic Prostate Surgery
Does Robotic Prostate Surgery lead to Urinary Incontinence?
There are 3 main mechanisms to exercise urinary control in men. While the prostrate is removed, the bladder neck is also cut during surgery , and the only remaining mechanism left intact to hold urine is the external sphincter. Thus patients may leak urine after surgery, but Kegel’s exercises are taught to strengthen muscles in order to gain urine control.
Majority of patients develop good continence or control in weeks or months following surgery. For prostatectomy, complete continence (no leakage at all) is obtained in 94% of patients within 6 months in case of robotic surgery.
Are there any sexual side effects of Robotic Prostate Surgery?
The degree of sexual dysfunction is determined by many factors like age, aggressiveness of surgery, etc. Most men experience at least temporary erectile problems after a Radical Prostatectomy.
