Sixty-Five years old lady presented with a diagnosis of a large vascular tumor, called Angiomyolipoma.
This tumor which has large blood vessels coursing through its substance was wrapping itself around the right kidney, deriving its blood supply from the kidney itself .The size of the tumor was estimated to be 12.5cm x 11.4cm x 10.8 cm. She had been seen by various urological surgeons in Delhi and was advised
to undergo an open surgery, as Robotic surgery was apparently not a usual feasible option. Besides, the right kidney needed to be sacrificed, as this was virtually inseparable from the tumor.
However when she was seen at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, we discussed the option of a safe Robotic surgery for removal of tumor while saving the right kidney. We planned and executed a Robotic surgery spanning over five hours of hard work, leading to removal of tumor while leaving behind a healthy normally
functioning right kidney. The postoperative period was uneventful and the patient was discharged after 5 days. This was like an impossible dream come true for the patient and her family. This was yet another example of Robotic surgery resulting in an excellent outcome and a grateful family
